Roll it away with Foam

Monday Jun 23, 2008

Due to the weather damage that the hall my acrobatics lessons are held in suffered, my Wednesday night class had to be put on hold - much to my disappointment.

I was excited last Monday that I could join in with the afternoon group until the hall was fixed.

I’m not really sure why this occurred, perhaps it was from the couple of weeks break from lessons, the type of drills we did or perhaps the combination of my training earlier that day, but in just 15 minutes after the class, DOMS (Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness) hit my quadriceps like a ton of bricks - not so delayed after all!

Monday night my legs felt like they had been corked and I felt rather wobbly on them. Tuesday and Wednesday I could barely walk, Thursday and Friday’s training was still painful and by Saturday morning (just in time for climbing), the pain had finally subsided, phew!

Thank goodness for the foam roller, it definitely helped me get through it all!

When muscles become tight, stiff or sore, it can often be related to a build up off lactic acid and other toxins between the muscle and the fascia which is a cling wrap like substance that holds the muscle bundles together. The fascia should move freely over the muscles as we move and flex them, however when toxins build up, movement becomes restricted.

A good masseuse is the best answer but most of us don’t have one on hand for each time our muscles are sore after a Stonesworkout or stressful day at work. Using a foam roller is the next best thing for freeing the built up toxins and releasing the muscles. The foam roller is easy to use and you can have one right at home to use at will. I found it very useful to help relieve my sore quads and you can use it for most of your muscle groups and also to help with posture re-alignment. Many of my clients enjoy rolling out there back before bed as it helps to relax and release them.
